About the workshops
Workshop #1: Rye Lane Through Young Eyes
Saturday 10th July, 11am - 3pm
Based in a space near the Aylesham Centre in Peckham
Led by: ZCD Architects x Nimtim Architects
In this workshop you will be introduced to the role of the architect in learning, looking/listening, making and explaining spaces. Through a walking tour of the local Rye Lane, Peckham area, you will experience spaces using analytical tools such as drawing, interviewing, photography & video recording. As you engage with the community, there is a potential to listen to stories of local people based in the area; recording how things have changed and how they may continue to change.
You will then create a collaborative piece of work bringing together findings from the walking tour and presenting back to the group. This piece of work will stand as a manifesto of ‘what to hold on to, what to let go off and what to change’ presenting a your unique perspective of the built environment in Rye Lane.
Workshop #2: Building Communities for Everyone
Thursday 15th July, 9.30am – 2.00pm
Elephant & Castle to Walworth Road (Burgess Park)
Led by: Mae x Urban Symbiotics
Architecture is as much about what is between the buildings, as the buildings themselves. Through a walk and talk from Elephant & Castle to Burgess Park we will explore the neighbourhoods along the Walworth Road in Southwark, including a visit to Mae’s new project within the Aylesbury Estate. Alongside our team, we will discuss the strengths & weaknesses of the area, public spaces, social requirements, sustainability, etc.
In this workshop you will take notes and polaroid photographs, then gather our findings for our workshop held at a local café. We will work together to understand what your priorities are for your local community and what you would like to see more of in the ever-changing London landscape. We will end the morning with a relaxed chat with our team and review ways in which you can continue to contribute to the London place-making conversation over the summer. We will also produce a publication of our workshop findings.
Workshop #3: The People’s Market
Saturday 17th July, 11am - 3pm
East Street Market, Southwark
Led by: We Made That x Alpa Depani
Public spaces such as street markets play an important part in civic life. East Street Market – which today hosts stalls selling fruit & veg, meat, clothes and household items – has been going since 1880, though street trading in the Walworth area goes as far back as the 16th century. It is a space for buying and selling but also a space for social interaction – a democratic space that serves a cross-section of society and gives us clues about the history of the area.
In this workshop you will explore the East Street Market and this corner of Walworth. We want to understand how the market is used by people, and how well it serves them – or doesn’t serve them. You will use the tools employed by architects and urban designers to analyse a place through observation and conversations with people, translating ideas into analytical drawings, maps or collages.
Workshop #4: Reconnect with Lambeth
Saturday 24th July, 11am - 3pm (provisional date TBC)
Various locations in Lambeth
The Salads are a group of female Architects who run monthly Saturday morning tours of significant buildings and places in London. We are a growing collective of over 300 (ladies and lads) who enjoy the simple pleasure of discovering a new place and being guided by the person who designed, built, runs or uses these spaces.
In this workshop you will discover some incredible buildings in your local area or neighbourhood with us. We will visit fantastic and varied examples of recently completed Architecture with the lead designers and explore what makes these spaces great to see, work in or study. We will be looking at their scale, materials, landscape and how they were built whilst documenting our experience with various tools, including filming, sketching and social media.
